Development Update #3: Perks and Feats of Strength!
Welcome to the third development update for Sanctum 2! My name is Armin Ibrisagic and I work as a game designer at Coffee Stain Studios. Today I’ll be talking about two of our most exciting features: perks and feats of strength!
Perks
Sanctum 1 was an awesome game, but many players felt that they wanted more ways to customize their characters and playstyle. We have added a perk system in Sanctum 2, but we want perks to be more than just a slight boost to your damage output. The design motto for Sanctum 2 is “intense action, deep strategy”, and we definitely want our perk system to reflect that. Perks should have a huge impact on the way you play the game, and by combining them to work in synergy with each other, players should be able to go pretty bananas with their playstyle in Sanctum 2.
To illustrate an example, there is one perk that doubles your clip size and rate of fire. Combine this with the Adrenaline Rush perk that increases your movement speed every time your shots hit an enemy, and throw in the Rymdskor perk that allows you to double-jump and do damage to enemies you land on and you’ll be a lightning-fast, bouncing & shooting ball of doom!
Aw yes, progression!
In Sanctum 2, players will rank up by killing enemies and completing maps. By ranking up, you will also unlock more and more perks to choose from, and you will also be able to have more perks active at the same time. There are quite a lot of perks to choose from, but the maximum amount of perks you can equip at one time is three, so choose carefully!
Feats of Strength
The difficulty of Sanctum 2 will be very different from what players are used to. Instead of having players pick difficulty modes such as easy, normal or hard, Sanctum 2 will instead use the Feat of Strength system. Apart from playing a map at its standard difficulty setting, you may also choose to add feats of strength to the map you’re playing. For example, one certain feat of strength doubles the hit-points of all enemies; while another makes them run much faster. Right now there are five different feats of strength. Beating a level with one feat of strength is quite hard, while beating a level with all five is something only the very best Core Guardians will be able to achieve. It’s also worth mentioning that the more feats of strength you add to a level, the more XP you will get if you manage to complete it.
I’ll top off this update with an environment screenshot!

That’s all for now, thanks for reading, and I hope you’ll tune in next week!
Kisses,
Armin Ibrisagic
