About

Coffee Stain Studios was initially started by a group of 9 students in college who wanted to start making games. The first PC game they worked on was Sanctum, an FPS/Tower Defense hybrid game that they developed during college. When college was over, Sanctum was polished and finished up, and released on April 2011. Being the worlds first hybrid between First Person Shooter and Tower Defense our unique concept made the game an indie hit on Steam. We expected to sell 25 000 copies to break even, but Sanctum ended up selling over 600 000 copies. That allowed us to get a proper office, hire more people, and provided a budget for our next game: Sanctum 2, which ended up being even a bigger hit than the first Sanctum!

The fact that we've always financed our games ourselves has allowed us complete creative freedom without ever having to go to a publisher to be able to make a game. That's why we're always able to make games the way we want them to be, and that's also why our games stand out from the rest.

After Sanctum 2, the studio decided to do an internal gamejam to brainstorm for new and fresh ideas. One of these ideas was Goat Simulator, and after a couple of weeks of development, some short gameplay footage was uploaded to Youtube. A couple of days later, that video already had millions of views, and fans were rising all over the world and asking us to release the game for real on Steam. Goat Simulator was released on April 1st 2014, and is so far our best selling game ever. As a thank-you to our community, we've been adding free content updates for quite a while now after release, but we've also used the money Goat Simulator has made to finance the development of another, super secret game that will be revealed in the future.
